Port of Piraeus
If you're arriving in Athens on a cruise ship or planning to take a ferry to the Greek islands, the Port of Piraeus will be your gateway. Although it's one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean, getting from the port to the center of Athens is easier than ever, thanks to the recent metro expansion. In this guide, we'll explain how to make the most of your stopover and the best way to get around.
How to Get From the Port of Piraeus to the Center of Athens
1. Metro Line 3 (Blue): The Fastest Option
Since the opening of the Line 3 (blue) extension, you can travel directly from the port to the heart of the city without having to change trains.
- Route: Connects Piraeus station with the main sights in Athens, such as Monastiraki (ideal for visiting the Acropolis) and Syntagma Square.
- Travel time: Approximately 20-25 minutes to the city center.
- Price: € 1.20 (US$ 1.38) (standard 90-minute ticket).
- Frequency: Every 4-8 minutes.
2. X80 Express Bus (Peak Season Only)
This line is specifically designed for tourists and cruise ship passengers. It connects the cruise terminals with the city's most iconic landmarks.
- Route: Cruise Terminal - Acropolis - Syntagma Square.
- Price: Only the 24-hour ticket (€ 4.10 (US$ 4.73)) or the 3-day tourist pass is accepted. The single ticket (€ 1.20 (US$ 1.38)) cannot be used.
- Hours: Generally operates between May and October, from 7 am to 9:15 pm.
3. PrivateTransfer or Taxi
If you're looking for comfort or are traveling with family or in a group, a private transfer is the best option.
- Private Transfer: The most comfortable option for traveling at a fixed price and without worries. We recommend booking in advance so the driver can be waiting for you with a sign in the arrivals terminal. You can book your private transfer here at the best price.
- Taxi: The journey costs between € 20 (US$ 23.08) and € 30 (US$ 34.62), depending on traffic and time of day. Avoid taxis without meters at the ship's exit.

Understanding the Port: Terminals A, B, & C
Piraeus is vast. Knowing where your cruise ship docks will save you a lot of time:
- Terminal A (Miaoulis): The closest to the main exit.
- Terminals B and C (Themistocles and Alkimos): These are further away. If your ship docks here, we recommend using the free internal port shuttle bus, which will take you to the main exit to connect with the metro or bus.
Where to Leave Your Luggage? (Luggage Storage in Piraeus)
If your flight leaves late and you want to enjoy Athens without carrying heavy bags, you have several luggage storage options:
- Inside the Metro/Train station: There are automated lockers for around € 5 (US$ 5.77)-€ 10 (US$ 11.54) per day.
- External services: Around the port, you'll find partner locations where you can store your luggage for € 3.50 (US$ 4.03) per day. It's advisable to book online to guarantee your spot.
What to See Near the Port (Without Going to Athens)
If you've already visited Athens or prefer to stay near the ship (not the most common option), Piraeus has some very charming areas:
- Mikrolimano: A fishing port full of fresh fish tavernas right on the waterfront. It's the most beautiful and authentic area of Piraeus.
- Pasalimani: Ideal for strolling and admiring the luxury yachts while enjoying a frappé.
- Piraeus Archaeological Museum: Home to unique bronze statues that rival those in the city center.
Pro Tips for Your Stopover
- Beware of strikes: Greece experiences frequent transport strikes. If you're traveling independently by metro, always check local information on your arrival day.
- Allow time for your return journey: Although the metro is fast, the Port of Piraeus suffers from massive traffic jams in the afternoon. Try to be back in the port area at least 2 hours before the ship departs.
- Transportation tickets: You can buy tickets from the machines at the metro station. You must validate them before boarding.
