Public Holidays in Greece

This list of Greek bank holidays will come in handy while planning your trip to Athens, so you know if there are any observances or holidays during your stay.  

Bank holidays

  • New Year’s Day: 1 January
  • Epiphany: 6 January
  • Clean Monday (Kathari Deftera): The date varies. Celebrates the first day of Lent for Orthodox Christians.
  • Independence Day: 25 March
  • Orthodox Good Friday: The date varies
  • Orthodox Easter Monday: The date varies
  • Labor Day: 1 May
  • The Ochi Day (Mera tu Ochi): 28 October. Commemorates the country’s refusal to succumb to the Italian troops during World War II, in 1940.
  • Christmas Day: 25 December
  • St. Stephen’s: 26 December
